Flow Charts

While flowcharts are first introduced in the Indiana Academic 6-8 CS Standards, flowcharts can be used to help students understand the logic of sequences, cause-effect relationships, and text structures in ELA, science, or any other subject that introduces them to these ideas (for instance, like understanding the sequence in solving a math problem).

**This is not a standalone activity but a concept that can be added (on paper or virtually) to any current lesson plan or project.

Tips for Running Activity

  • Have students create flowcharts for books you read in class, books they read alone, events that have a set sequence.
  • Students can peer review each other’s flowcharts to make sure they make sense and to point out issues that they come across.

Assessment Opportunities

Have students create unique flowcharts.  Do not have them title their flowcharts.  Either as a class, or as individual peers, have other students try to guess what the flowchart is depicting.

Extension Opportunities

Suggested Usage and Integration:

  • Write a story, narrative, or process – Students can use flowcharts to engage with the logic of a sequence and internalize cause-effect relationships.
  • Identify patterns in texts – Students can use flowcharts to identify and express patterns in texts to build understanding of text structures.
  • Find the sequence of events – Students can use flowcharts to find the sequence of events in a fictional or informative text.
  • Map out a story – Students can use flowcharts as a writing graphic organizer to map out their story.
