Creating an Interactive Poster for a Book Report

Add activity this as an option for your book reports or as a requirement for all students to do as a class digital book report and share.

Any time you are having students write a report (book, topical, etc), this is a great alternative option for standard papers, poster boards, and presentations.

Main Lesson Plan

Activity Link: Coding Book Covers Module on Code.org

  • 3 lessons that can be condensed or extended as you see fit
  • Lesson Slides: Book Covers

Tips for Running Activity:

  • The first time you do this, you can assign this activity for all students to do in class for the same book that you read as a group. This allows you and the students to learn the expectations and limitations of the tool together.
  • Assign digital book reports as future assignments or as an alternative option when assigning other types of book report options.
  • Alternative Digital Book Report Platforms: Google Slides and/or Scratch are other alternatives to using Code.org.
    • Here is a lesson plan created previously in collaboration with Nextech and the Indiana Department of Education, with the help of teacher Amanda Moore on how to use Google Slides as an interactive Book Poster.

Assessment Opportunities

  • Code.org provides this rubric for their Code a Book Cover lesson plan: Book Cover Project Rubric (2023)
  • Have students that have read the same book peer review other students’ work and give them positive and constructive feedback.
  • You could have students present their digital book report to their peers.
