Data Science Dice

These seven Data Science Dice (or numbered cards to be used with regular dice) were designed to engage students creatively and confidently with data. Whether students don’t know how to begin or are stuck debating how to present their findings, the dice offer solutions to keep students moving forward. The dice are intended to help students (and teachers) with ideas or suggestions on how to use, generate, or evaluate their data. Each roll is a new experience! They’re a playful, hands-on way to make data science approachable and fun.

Main Activity Instructions

Use these data science cards to help your students with various aspects of data science. You can use them in a variety of ways, including but not limited to:

  • Giving students ideas for ways to collect data if they are struggling with how they want to collect their data
  • Helping students determine how they should try to visualize data they have collected
  • Assigning various data analysis steps to students within a group so that each student knows which step(s) of the process they are in charge of
  • Give them ways to analyze and mathematically analyze the data they have already collected

Dice Types by Card Color:

  • Orange & Teal: Different Data Visualizations – These are a variety of graphs and charts as images
  • White: Ways to Collect Data – Different ways students can record the data they collect
  • Blue: Steps of Data Analysis – Can help assign roles in a group
  • Yellow: Ways to Analyze the Data – Suggestion on how to try and analyze the data
  • Green: Mathematical Analysis – Mathematical ways to analyze numerical data
  • Black: Data Collection Suggestions – Ideas for students struggling with what type of data to collect

Assessment Opportunities

  • A great way to assess the students on their understanding of what they roll is to have them determine if what they rolled even makes sense for their assigned task. For instance, if a student collects favorite ice cream flavors and rolls the data visualization dice that has them create a line plot or line graph, they should be able to say, “It does not make sense for me to use my data to create a line plot/graph because… “
  • You can have your student roll the dice until they get X various results of the roll and then have them manipulate/analyze the data X number of times based on their rolls.
