Simon Says – Introduction to Conditionals

In this activity the traditional game of Simon Says is remixed to practice conditionals (If, Then statement and/or If, then/else statements).

Use this activity to introduce, review, or build on conditional statements. Scaffold conditional knowledge by slowly progressing through the different rounds of Simon Says. Educators can use the rounds as standalone games for 5-10 minutes of play each day, or play all the rounds for a complete class period of conditional content.

Tips for Running this Activity

  • Play outside or spread out inside for a fun kinesthetic game
  • As the rounds progress with difficulty consider having the statements on a screen in addition to saying them verbally. Seeing these complex commands visually as well as hearing them, will help with understanding.
  • As the rounds progress with difficulty focus more on the understanding of the concept and less on using “simon says.” feel free to do a round where you tell your student that all statements in this round are Simon says even if it isn’t said. This will allow them to focus on the conditional statement versus if Simon said or not.
  • Have students come up with their own conditionals for the next round of Simon Says, have them explain what is a correction action / incorrection action as it relates to the game.
