Elementary Creating and Interpreting Graphs

Use this activity at various points during the school year to help cultivate students’ knowledge and understanding of creating and interpreting graphs. While data and data science is a huge part of computer science, graphing is universally used in every subject, so have students graph topics that are relevant to the content they are currently learning about or things that are interesting to them.

Main Lesson Plan

Using one of the many Data & Graphing worksheets from K5 Learning, or using your own data and graphing worksheet related to something the students are learning in class, help the students work through creating and interpreting a variety of data sets through graphing.

Tips for Running Activity

  • Be sure to engage the students in conversation about what they are surprised by when they are analyzing the data they have graphed.
  • Have students consider if there are different or better ways to graph the information.
  • What alternate data would students have preferred been collected?

Assessment Opportunities

  • Have students create a data set for their classmates to graph.
